VISUAL ARTS NETWORK - CURATORIAL PANEL

On Friday the 1st of July at The Byron at Byron Resort, Arts Northern Rivers launched the first of its Visual Arts Network initiatives - a curatorial advisory clinic. A panel of five internationally recognised curators and gallery directors flew in to participate in these one-on-three private clinics engaging artists in a dialogue about their work and giving them practical advice and feedback.

The Visual Arts Network will be running a series of these curatorial panels which are an opportunity for some of the region's local artists to receive valuable feedback and be brought to the attention of some of the most prominent and influential curators in Australia.

The Curators who participated were: Julie Ewington, Head of Australian Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Russell Storer, Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, David Broker, Deputy Director, Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, Jan Murphy, Director of Jan Murphy Gallery, Brisbane Steven Alderton, Director, Lismore Regional Gallery. The curatorial panel unanimously agreed that the quality of the work presented on the day was extremely impressive.

12 local artists were selected and each had 45 minutes to discuss their work with the panel. Nimbin based artist Ainé was one of the lucky artists selected, "The opportunity to talk to the panel helped me to confirm my direction. Afterwards inspiration started flooding through my mind".

Artists who participated were:
Ainé, (Nimbin), Dave Funnell (Grafton), Lyndall Adams (Wooloweyah), Garth Lena (Fingal Head) Daniel Brinsmead (Fingal Head), Christine Willcocks (Mullumbimby), Melissa Hirsch (Byron Bay), Liz Deckers (Ocean Shores), Lae Oldmeadow (Tweed), Karla Dickens (Bangalow), Cornelius Delaney (Lismore)

Stay tuned and keep in touch with the Visual Arts Network, there are more curatorial panels to come!!

BALLINA’S PUBLIC ART POLICY ON DISPLAY

On 23 June, Ballina Council resolved to place their newly drafted Public Art Policy on exhibition for public comment. A group of local arts professionals including Lois Randall from ANR, Grafton based community artist Pamela Denise, mosaic artist Scott Harrower and Byron Bay artist John Dahlsen worked with Ballina Council over several months to develop the draft document. Ballina Council has developed this policy in recognition of the importance of artistic expression in fostering community well being, enhancing a sense of place and reflecting the cultural diversity and history of the community.

This important draft Policy document provides a framework for increasing the levels of Public Art in Ballina Shire. It will be used in the commissioning of new works, acquiring existing works, collection management and maintenance by Council staff as well as external parties such as developers, architects and urban designers. The draft Policy includes an implementation strategy, public art placement strategy, selection processes for council projects and a range of other issues relating to public art. It will be on public exhibition until 5 August at the following locations: Ballina, Lennox Head and Alstonville Libraries, Ballina Tourism Information Centre, Ballina Council and Wardell Community Access Space. Everyone is welcome to view the document and provide feedback to Council.
