NEWS FROM REGIONAL MUSEUMS DEVELOPMENT OFFICER, JOAN KELLY

For the last three weeks I've been out on the road with local photographer Cher Breeze, visiting the museums in the region and taking photographs of their most significant collection items.  The items photographed were identified as part of the Regional Significance Assessment Project, which was funded by the National Library of Australia in association with the Regional Museums Development Project.  The photo survey will ensure that museums have professional photos of up to six of these objects, which can then be used for exhibition or publicity purposes. The main objective of the project, however, was to document the condition of these very precious artefacts.

A highlight of my month was the opening of the Yamba Museum’s 1950s Rock’n Back in Time exhibition on June 6th. It was a fun night with three old Holdens forming an honour row outside the entrance, live music by Graham Dean and great reminiscences by Bill Dougherty who officially opened the show.  The exhibition continues until July 27, with a number of associated events still to come, including on July 26, a rock’n’roll dance at the Yamba Bowling Club, where the Grafton rock’n’roll dance group will be putting on a dance exhibition, and on July 29, the Grafton Car Rally on at the Yamba Museum. So dress up in your favourite ‘50s dance gear and join in the fun!

Don’t forget also that the Alstonville Plateau Historical Society is putting on the Airing of the Quilts exhibition at Crawford House from 4-6 July.

And keep an eye out for the imminent opening of the new wing of the Evans Head Living Museum!
