Visual Arts Network: 'Taking a whole of government approach
to promoting the visual arts’
Background
The Northern Rivers region of NSW is home to the highest
concentration of artists outside the capital cities. Many of these artists
are established professionals (such as Angus MacDonald, John Dahlsen,
Michael Taylor, Rose McKinley, James Guppy, Digby Moran, Rodney Black,
Samantha Wortelhoek & Damien Naughton, Erika Mayer and Colin Heaney).
Arts Northern Rivers has developed the regional Visual
Arts Network (VAN) strategy to provide professional development, marketing
support and export assistance for local artists.
The Visual Arts Network is funded by the NSW Department
of State and Regional Development, the NSW Ministry for the Arts, and
by the Federal Department of Transport and Regional Services. Arts Northern
Rivers is also supporting the project and Austrade is also a key partner.
The aims of the Network are to enable visual artists
to reach beyond the region to access broad national and international
markets; to make Visual Arts a viable creative industry sector and important
economic driver in the region; to provide professional development opportunities
for visual artists; to develop national and international partnerships
for Northern Rivers artists; and to further the national and international
profile of the Northern Rivers as the creative region.
Features:
• regional Network Coordinator with arts business/marketing expertise
• formation of a visual artists network or clusters
• range of marketing events and initiatives
• high profile curated virtual gallery and portal to gallery and
artists sites
• high profile Visual Arts Curatorial and Advisory Panel
• collaborative marketing strategies
• business development support and streamed business skills workshops
• export development focus
• series of Northern Rivers exhibitions at targeted national and
international galleries
• website and selective virtual gallery
A website is now being developed as a marketing tool
and information resource for artists in the region. This website will
be linked to the sites of individual artists and galleries. It will
include a selective virtual gallery space at the gateway, which will
feature monthly exhibitions of work from the region, each curated
by a high profile guest curator from the Visual Arts Advisory and
Curatorial Panel.
• visual arts curatorial and advisory panel
A high profile panel of twelve nationally recognised
arts experts, writers and curators from both outside and within the
region will advise leading Northern Rivers artists regarding professional
development and marketing possibilities for their work, and facilitate
pathways to markets and exhibition opportunities at a national and
international level.
