Disability Inclusion Reference Group - Expression of Interest
Arts Northern Rivers is establishing a Disability Inclusion Reference Group to play an active role in shaping our programs and priorities for artists with disability.
We are seeking community members from across the region who are passionate about arts and culture and identify as d/Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent. The Reference Group will bring together people with a broad range of lived experiences of disability, ensuring a diversity of perspectives within the Group.
The Group will share their knowledge and lived experience to help Arts Northern Rivers improve access, inclusion and opportunities for d/Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent artists and communities across the region.
Reference Group members will be engaged for a two-year term, with four meetings per year. Meetings will include a mix of in-person and online meetings, with Group members paid for their attendance at each meeting. Applicants are encouraged to tell us about any specific access requirements when completing their EOI form.
Terms of Reference for the Group will be set by the inaugural Reference Group members.
Expressions of Interest open Tuesday 6 October and close Sunday 1 November 2026.
Selection Process
Expressions of Interest will be reviewed by the Arts Northern Rivers Executive Director and two peers from the d/Deaf and disabled community.
A shortlist of applicants will be invited to an informal conversation with members of the panel before the Reference Group is selected.

A Note About Language
We recognise that language around disability is personal and continues to evolve. Throughout this EOI, we generally use identity-first language (for example, ‘disabled artist’), reflecting the approach used in Equity: the Arts and Disability Associated Plan and broader preferences expressed by many d/Deaf and disabled artists and arts workers.
We recognise that people use different language to describe themselves and their experiences, and that these preferences may change over time. We respect each person's choice and encourage applicants to tell us the language they prefer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to live in the Northern Rivers?
Yes, at this time we are only inviting Expressions of Interest from those living in the Northern Rivers area. This means applicants must reside in the Ballina, Byron, Clarence Valley, Kyogle, Lismore City, Richmond Valley or Tweed Shire local government areas.
Is this a paid role?
Members of the Reference Group will be paid a fee for their attendance at each meeting. There will be four meetings held per year.
Where and when will meetings be held?
Meetings will take place four times a year, with some meetings being held in person and some online. The exact dates and times of these meetings will be negotiated with the selected Reference Group members.
In-person meeting locations will likely be held at the Arts Northern Rivers office.
Reference Group members should have access to a computer and reliable internet connection in order to participate in online meetings.
How long will meetings go for?
It may vary occasionally depending on the content of the meeting, but it is anticipated that each meeting will run for 1.5 to 2.5 hours (including breaks as required).
Do I have to be an artist?
We are looking for people with knowledge and experience relevant to the arts and culture sector. This does not have to mean experience as a professional artist. It could mean experience as an active member of a community arts group or as someone who works in the creative industries.
If you are unsure about whether to apply, please contact Emma-June Curik to discuss further.
I am a carer, support worker or employee of an organisation who works with people with disability. Can I apply?
We are currently looking for members who identify as persons living with disability or who are d/Deaf or neurodivergent. If you support someone who would like to apply and requires support to do so, please feel free to contact Emma-June Curik to discuss any questions you may have.
